| Model | Galant GS-X AWD | | What things have gone wrong with the car? | First, the car started burning oil, like most Mitsu cars I've seen. Was told its the engine seals (never got fixed due to next problem). Then, the shifter started getting vague, then finally wouldn't go into 2nd gear at all. Diagnosed as a bad main tranny bearing (5 speed). Car was rendered undriveable after that. Now, for the normal problems...the engine is a 2.0L 16v which loves to run at higher rpm's. The tranny gearing does not allow this, and has VERY tall gearing, more suited for a large V-6. Translation? Slow. 0-60 in 11 seconds. This doesn't help gas mileage much either, especially in an AWD car. The ABS didn't work consistently, possibly not the car's fault.Oh, and the whine of the engine. Sort of a 'rrrrrrrr', not really typical of a piston engine. | | |
| | General comments? | Overall, this car suprised me. Way back when, it was rated as a 'best buy' by Consumer Reports. It has all the promise of a performance machine. ABS, 4 disks, AWD, 16v...but these are only stats, not performance facts. Mitsu spent WAY too much effort in the gadgets, and not enough on the mechanical quality (typical early Japanese). I'm willing to bet the VR-4 model will kick some serious butt, but those are exquisitely rare and are still plagued by the same problems. | | Previous car | Audi Quattro, Subaru AWD |
